Birimian rocks are generally volcanic and sedimentary in nature, and are known for their gold-bearing deposits. They were formed during the Proterozoic Era, between 2.5 and 2.2 billion years ago, and are characterized by distinctive greenstone belts, which consist of alternating layers of volcanic and sedimentary rocks.
The Birimian rocks are of great interest to geologists and mining companies because of their gold deposits. Many of the largest gold mines in West Africa are located in Birimian rock formations.
